A short week
underway, following Easter. Chocolate eggs and bunnies galore, I love our
version of Easter in today’s time. Nothing like a four day obligatory weekend,
double coated in chocolatey goodness.
Being the other
largest religiously rooted public holiday besides Christmas, to my surprise,
however, not many are aware of the original significance of Easter.
Briefly put, Easter
signifies a time of celebration and feasting following the holy month of Lent. Lent
being the 40 day period preceding Easter where believers
expel their energy on their spiritual selves through extra
prayer, charity, self-denial and seek forgiveness. Good Friday
signifies the day Christ was crucified, whilst Easter Sunday the day Christ was
resurrected. Many religions encompass similar traditions. For example, the
Islamic month of Ramadan. This is where believers observe fast for 30 days
followed by the celebration of the festival of Eid.
