Uncovering Vintage Treasures at Sharjah Gold Souk

If you're anything like me, you love the drama of silver with gemstones over gold bling.

Sharjah Gold Souk is one of my favorite places in this Emirate.

Also known as the Blue Souk owing to its beautiful Persian-inspired architecture, the market is split into two buildings. One side houses rows and rows of gold stores, but I belong to the other side, one floor up.

Here you will find a treasure trove of antique finds, beautiful Pashminas & Persian carpets, and vintage silver vendors who also stick arrays of semi-precious and valuable gemstones.

Looking for a one-of-a-kind statement necklace? Check out the gorgeous vintage Afghani pieces I saw below. Very Iris Apfel I'd say!

I also loved the array of prayer beads in every size and color:

Best of all, skilled craftsmen will create a mix of beads and silver, customized to your tastes. One tip would be to bargain. Haggle till you get the best price and don't be shy to look up similar stores first.

Very influenced by Iris Apfel and the pic of her and her long strand of chunky red beads, I got myself a long strand of red amber beads with antique silver pieces infused in between. The necklace goes right down to my belly button!

I also got a chunky statement necklace made of vintage silver beads and large turquoise nuggets:

Like?! I love it :-)

Iris Apfel - A Rare Bird of Fashion

Whoever says eccentric dressing and growing old never go hand in hand needs to meet Iris Apfel. At 91, Iris Apfel continues to turn heads with her bold unconventional fashion sense, has fashion designers like Isaac Mizrahi and Duro Olowu as fans, has been featured in topnotch fashion publications like Vogue and the New York Times, and has been the poster girl for departmental stores like Barneys.

Born in 1921 to an American father and Russian mother, Iris always had a penchant for personal style. She worked as an interior designer by profession, and set up a company called ‘Old World Weavers’ with her hubby Carl Apfel. They worked on recreating old world upholstery and their unique offering had a loyal customer following including the White House. The Apfels worked for nine presidents during their tenure in the White House, from Truman to Clinton, and then sold off the company in 1992 after retirement. Ralph Lauren based a 2006 collection on upholstery fabrics as a tribute to Apfel's work as a textile designer.

But what has kept Iris Apfel in the headlines is her show-stopping sense of style. It all started in 2005 when Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York did an exhibit of her collection and called it ‘Rara Avis (Rare Bird)’. The show was a massive success, and many travel versions of the show continued. The Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History in Boynton Beach Florida is planning to dedicate an entire building to Apfel’s exhibits. The exhibits were so other-worldly that many thought Iris had long expired. Iris asked her nephew to tell anyone who thought this that “she’s very much alive and just walking around to save funeral expenses.”

Her sharp wit is evident in her attitude to life and fashion in general. Wearing her signature oversized Harry Potteresque glasses, Iris playfully remarks “the more to see you with”.

British-Nigerian designer Duro Olowu remarked “Fashion is like a big box of lego to her”. Iris’ approach to style is legendary in her incorporation of high and low, ethnic and vintage with contemporary trends, and an idiosyncratic brand of humor. As the New York Times art critic Roberta Smith once wrote: "before multiculturalism was a word, Mrs Apfel was wearing it". She continues to inspire others to express themselves and enjoy life to the fullest. Iris believes you don't have to spend a lot of money to be stylish, it is all in how you put things together. She is proof that putting an outfit together can be just as artful as painting a portrait. "There's a sad lack of glamour in the world today," Apfel mourns. "And there's absolutely no fantasy."

Iris Apfel’s style revolves around her principle that “more is more, and less is a bore.” She has an enviable collection of accessories from the world over, and says “My mother worshipped the alter of accessory, and I got the bug.”

Earlier this year, Mac Cosmetics launched a collection in honor of Apfel. The range is a tribute to her love of bright colours and has quirky shades like Pink Pigeon and Party Parrot.

Iris has also never followed mainstream fashion, but wears what makes her feel good. Like a true New Yorker, Apfel does a great one-liner. One of her best is: "When you don't dress like everybody else, you don't have to think like everybody else." When she and her husband were invited to dinners at the White House, Iris donned a woolen outfit she had picked up from the flea market as it was comfortably warm for the setting.

She is as comfortable with a designer brand as she is with high-street labels like Top Shop. Apfel also abhors people who spend a fortune on designer clothing but have a fear of actually wearing them. She once visited a lady in the Midwest who has about 15,000 pieces and wanted to show Apfel some of her collection. When she took out "this divine Geoffrey Beene dress", Apfel said: "Oh my God, you must have had so much fun wearing it!" The woman was horrified. She said: "Wear it!? This is part of my collection. You don't wear your collection!" Apfel said: "In that case I don't have a collection."
Apfel has a story to tell about each of her outfits; she insists that hers is not a fashion collection, because she bought every piece to wear. "I'm a hopeless romantic. I buy things because I fall in love with them. I never buy anything just because it's valuable," she says. The unifying principle is excess. "My look is either very baroque or very Zen – everything in between makes me itch."

On the subject of ageing. "Coco Chanel once said that what makes a woman look old is trying desperately to look young. Why should one be ashamed to be 84? Why do you have to say that you're 52? Nobody's going to believe you anyway, so why be such a fool? It's nice that you got to be so old. It's a blessing."
At 91, Apfel is far busier than people half her age. Her spontaneity and insatiable curiosity are undoubtedly the driving forces of her success. Apfel currently tops my personal list of fashion icons; may we all be an Iris Apfel in our nineties!

Tips & Tricks for Shopping Online

I am an online fashion stalker. There I've said it. I am addicted to browsing fashion blogs and Google images of items I find interesting, and lately I've been trying to control my online shopping urges.

Don't get me wrong, online shopping is a real blessing for those of us who crave something different, something at a great price, perhaps even something exotic. But my recent splurges have not been kind on my wallet.

It's not just the money spent, but my impatience in waiting for the goods to get here. For example, I bought these gorgeous linen palazzo pants from Etsy recently. As they are custom-made to my size, they took approximately 2 months to get here so in the meantime my short-term memory went hazy and I splurged some more in real-life stores too!

These Etsy pants are super comfy and I'm even wearing them to work today with a fitted black shirt.

The other dilemma with online shopping is not always getting what you expected. I bought these 'skirt-pants' from the same buyer at Etsy. They look so good in the pic, rather they look so good on the petit model! The material and workmanship is lovely, but on me they come above the ankle (not exactly the look I was after). Will make do with these for casual wear, but given the price tag I was hoping to get more wear out of it and mix and match it for more semi-formal gigs.

And then there was the famed Asos website. Many seasoned online shoppers told me how wonderful this site was given they offer free worldwide delivery, and are super fast at it too. So good old shoppaholic me loaded up a virtual basket and counted days for the delivery. Sadly my stash never arrived. A month later, I sent them an email and they asked me to wait another 2 weeks (their free worldwide delivery system is not trackable so they were equally clueless on the parcel's whereabouts). Fast-forward another 2 weeks and they agreed to refund me the money, which was great. But it was a long wait and I really was looking forward to wearing the polka-dotted pants.

Another online shopping site I visit often is Ebay . Like Etsy, it is a collection of different sellers so its best to go through their ratings and selling histories before commiting to a purchase. Ebay is great as they cover you for any disputes, and here too I have recieved refunds for items that never made it here.

I am in love with this boho
linen jacket on Etsy!
Etsy and Ebay are great sites for looking up hard to find items. Etsy specialises in artisans who create handmade products, so this is the site to visit if you are looking for something unique and crafty. Ebay has anything and everything. Hubby wanted to get me an EcoDrive watch for my birthday, and we found the exact same watch would cost far less through Ebay! You can be a clever shopper these days thanks to Google!

In a nutshell, here are my tips and tricks on shopping online:

1) Only buy from reputed sites.

2) Check the reputation of a site - Google is your friend, look up reviews.

3) When using sites like Etsy and Ebay, check the seller's credentials.

4) Contact the seller before the purchase. Ask about the product, confirm they ship to your location and what the shipping fees will be. You will also get a hindsight on the buyer by their response time and enthusiasm.

5) Set up a Paypal account, its alot safer than using your actual credit card details.

6) Have patience! For me, this is the major negative as compared to realtime mall-hopping.

7) When the approximate arrival date nears, follow up! It's ok to be a nag, it should be a part of the service fee!

And here's my review of the sites I have bought from so far:

Ebay : This is a great site to look for anything and everything, you can literally spend hours here! And Ebay has its own disputes center should you face issues with a trader. Best to still be vigillant and do your research on individual sellers before hitting the "Buy Now" button.

Etsy : A site full of crafty people offering gorgeous crafty things! I love this site. Although some pieces can be expensive, in most instances these pieces are unique and hand-made. Once again, like Ebay, do your homework on the individual seller - unlike Ebay, Etsy does not have a disputes center.

Asos : I have heard rave reviews from many here and in New Zealand. Sadly I never got my parcel, so can't comment on product quality. The service was average. It took some clicking around to find where I needed to go to lodge a complaint on missing parcels, and the responses were a little slow. I finally got a refund after approximately two weeks of email exchanges.

InOnIt : This is an Indian shopping website featuring funky Indo-Western outfits and accessories. Their service is excellent (I got responses within a couple of hours!) and delivery time is also super fast and on schedule. The only downside is the shipping fee is pretty steep. Might make sense to buy a few products in one shipment to average out the delivery cost.

I hope my online shopping insights have been useful to you, happy shopping!

Spicy Peshawari Meat Curry Recipe from Karachi Darbar

A Peshawari curry order is pretty much mandatory when we eat out at a Pakistani joint, so when I found this recipe posted in Gulf News I had to give it a go. Moreover, this recipe is a contribution from Karachi Darbar, arguably UAE's most popular Pakistani joint; can't go wrong with that!

The recipe originally calls for mutton, but I used beef instead.

Mutton Peshawari Kadai Recipe:
Serves 4 - 6 people
1 kg mutton (or beef)
250 grams ghee or oil
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
50 grams ginger paste
50 grams garlic paste
1 kg tomatoes cut into halves
3 tbsp yoghurt
2 tbsp chilli flakes
1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed
1 tsp black pepper, crushed
3 big green chillies, halved
Fresh coriander & ginger, chopped - for garnish

1) Fry meat, then add salt, ginger & garlic. Cook on medium flame till meat is half tender.

2) Add tomatoes & yoghurt, mix well. Cover & cook on low flame till tomatoes are soft.

3) Mix well on high flame for 15-20 minutes. Add chilli flakes & wait till water evaporates & oil comes up to the top.

4) Add coriander, black pepper & green chillies. Simmer on low for 10-15 mins.

5) Garnish with coriander & ginger. Serve with raita & naan (I served it with plain white rice).

Here's a pic of my attempt, and the verdict was pretty positive too!

Snapshots from a summer weekend...

Neon orange flats look great for summer!

Fresh fruit juices are a heathy choice for quenching summer thirst. Hubby had a thick blend of fresh mangoes while I opted for a refreshing melon smoothie:

A long walk and healthful juices... A little too goodie good? Look what we had for lunch: good old KFC!

PS: Lil Sis be proud of me, I'm posting this blogpost from my iPhone! Using the Blogger App :-)

20 iPhone Tips & Tricks

Big sis recently made the transition from the Android phone following to the Apple phone club.

Although she’s owned an iPad amongst her several top of the range gadgets for a while, here are 20 tips I’ve collated for her.

Basic shortcuts

1.       When reading a page in Safari/checking emails/messaging, tap anywhere along the status bar at the top to quickly scroll to the head of that page.

2.       Switching between apps without closing your current one can be achieved by double clicking the home button. This brings up a bar indicating all the ‘open’ apps, in the order that they were last used. Swipe along to find the one you want.

3.       Changing the song playing/volume of your music can also be done in the way above. This option’s located at the very end of the ‘open’ apps bar.

4.       The Notifications Centre is much the same as that of Android. Just pull down the page.

5.       If you added your Facebook/Twitter account to your iPhone you can update your status directly from the notifications screen. Siri too does the job if you don’t want to type out your status.

Calls

6.       Use the On/Off button at the top to quickly send a call to voicemail if you’re unable to take a call and the ringing/vibrating’s getting embarrassing.

7.       Alternatively when receiving a call pull up the handset icon on the bottom right hand corner of the call to choose from the various options. I have a “Sorry I’m driving” message I use. This can be created under Settings->Phone->Reply with message.

8.       Redial your last number called by just pressing “Call” on the keypad. It rings the last number called.

9.       Favourites: Add your most dialled/messaged contacts to this list. This will allow for quicker access to them on your phonebook as well allowing their calls when you use the “Do not disturb” option. Add me to this list!

10.   Do not disturb: This turns off all phone calls/messages (except your listed Favourites), notifications. You can set a time for this e.g. bedtime.

Miscellaneous

11.   Spotlight search:  I use this a lot. It’s pretty much a search tool for the phone. If you swipe to the left, you end up with a search bar and pretty much searches everything for the word typed.

12.   Save battery: Turn off your Bluetooth, location services, 3G internet when not required, they use up lots of battery otherwise. The same goes for Push notifications under Settings->Mail. Keeping it manual means your emails are refreshed only when you refresh them yourself rather than automatically. I do keep my Push notifications on as I prefer it automatically updated. Turn off apps that are used for calls or music after use e.g. Skype as they drain the battery faster. The most obvious battery saver would be the screen brightness found under Settings->Brightness.

13.   Weather and time: Add the cities you’re interested in for both options. To save battery you can choose to turn your hourly weather off.

14.   Screenshot: To take picture of your current screen, press the Home and On/Off button together. The screen should flash and if not on silent you’ll hear the camera click.

15.   Rotation lock: To stop the screen orientation changing especially when lying down, double click the home button and to the left of the Music controls press the rotation icon.

16.   Download Google Maps and YouTube. iOS 6 removed these from their defaults you know you got to have them!

17.   Wallpaper: Settings-> Brightness & Wallpaper. Here you can customise your wallpaper and lock screen to a photo you like.

Privacy

18.   Passcode: Maybe not on your iPad but definitely recommend for your iPhone. No fancy swipe patterns just 4 numbers like a pin. For a complex password got to Settings->General->Simple Passcode to change it.

19.   Siri: Now if e.g. you’d rather not have your Facebook status updated without you knowing, go to Settings and disable Siri when in locked mode.

20.   To prevent certain apps accessing your information location, contacts, calendar, reminders and pictures, go to Settings-> Privacy.

Sending Big Sis an iMessage now J

Eat Yourself Beautiful – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Ideas for Beautiful Skin & Hair (aka 'The Beauty Diet')

Advertising gurus take advantage of the narcissist in all of us and churn out new potions promising everlasting youth on a daily basis. Most carry hefty price tags and are only minimal on results. But the fountain of youth is closer and more affordable than you think; just open your fridge!

Good old watercress for example, can give a branded wrinkle cream a run for its money. A study conducted by the Watercress Alliance found consuming two cups of watercress daily can show a significant reduction in wrinkles in just two weeks.

Who ever said beauty comes from within definitely got it right. We are what we eat, and the better fuel you put in the better the results you can expect out of your body. Being inspired by the likes of Oprah and other health-promoting sites online, I’ve put together a list of ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner to create a more beautiful you. Let’s call it the ‘Beauty Diet’ shall we!

Breakfast

Green Tea – wake up your senses and kick off your metabolism for the day with a cup of green tea goodness. Green tea has been proven to have twice the antioxidant power of vitamin C, and regular consumption will make your skin glow.

Boiled egg – eating an egg on a daily basis is great for your hair. Eggs contain biotin which promotes cell growth, is rich in vitamin B12 to keep your locks nice and strong, and has a high level of protein to keep you energized throughout the day. Notice I say boiled eggs, not scrambled in dollops of butter :-)

Orange juice – wash it all down with the goodness of oranges. Vitamin C promotes collagen production (the good stuff all the expensive creams claim to have). Collagen keeps your skin looking fresh and youthful.

Lunch

Green Veges – you can literally eat yourself into a facelift with green veges like spinach, kale and swiss chard. Stir fry them, toss them into a salad, or make a juice. These powerhouses of beauty are full of beta-carotene (an excellent skin oxidant) and lutein. Lutein scavenges free radicals that come about from daily stress and pollution and cause aging.

Avocado – often given bad reviews for being ‘fatty’, avocado really is a ‘good guy’ when it comes to looking great. Packed with vitamins A, D, E and K, an avocado is nature’s own sunscreen, and hydrates and protects the skin from within. It is also full of heart-friendly fats to keep your pump running smoothly.

Sweet Potato – delicious, filling and full of vitamin E. Need I say more?

Virgin Organic Coconut Oil – For dessert, skip the sugar and have a spoonful of this instead. Coconut oil has long been known to be a wonderful skin and hair moisturizer, but consuming a little everyday will keep you hydrated from within. Jenifer Aniston swears by this routine.

Dinner

Oily Fish – salmon, mackerel, sardines. High in good fats, oily fish makes your skin glow with goodness.

Turkey – if you are not a fish fan, go for turkey instead. Low in fat, turkey meat is rich in zinc and selenium which act as antioxidants to increase immunity. 11 grams of turkey also has 75% of the daily recommended protein intake for an adult.

Carrots – carrots are rich in both alpha and beta carotenes. These easily convert to vitamin A which aids in new skin cell production. No wonder Bugs Bunny has managed to stay looking young all these decades!

Dark Chocolate – great news for you chocoholics! Dark chocolate is actually good for you (in moderation of course). When choosing chocolate the darker the better as dark chocolate has higher cacao content. Cacao is rich in phytochemicals called flavonols that protect the skin from free-radical damage that causes aging.

Snacks

Nuts – nuts keep you full and are packed with goodness. A handful of almonds and hazelnuts with cover your recommended daily intake of Vitamin E.

Fruits – grab a handful of berries such as blueberries and strawberries, or reach out for good old kiwi fruit. These fruits are packed with Vitamin C which aid in collagen production and keep capillaries healthy. Eat a few dried apricots, these are high in iron and improve skin tone. Reach out for tangerines; they are loaded with lutein, and excellent skin oxidant.

So stop splurging on the beauty shelves and invest in stocking your kitchen with the right ingredients instead.
